Celebrating 20 years of our Inkjet Technology

Introduction

This year marks a significant milestone for RISO Kagaku Corporation marking 20 years since our entry into inkjet printing. Our introduction to inkjet technology was a defining moment, positioning us as a global leader in high-speed, high-efficiency printing. Since then, we’ve continued to evolve, adapting to the ever-changing demands of the industry while delivering cutting-edge solutions.

There’s no better way to understand the evolution of a company than going back to where it all started, so let’s begin there…

Where it all started

Over the past 80 years, RISO has focused on creating innovative printing solutions to support the future success of schools and businesses, reaching 190 countries and regions. This vision was driven by our founder, Noboru Hayama, whose unwavering passion shaped the company’s mission. He believed that people should always pursue their ideals to secure a better future, and this inspired him to name his first mimeograph printing company “Ideal,” which became “RISO” in Japanese. At just 22, Noboru could never have imagined how transformative his printing innovations would become, starting with his mimeograph printer purchased to fund his university education and support his family.

Before the creation of inkjet printers or photocopiers, mimeographs were used as a means of duplication, especially in classrooms and offices. This machinery involved forcing ink through a stencil onto paper and was seen as an affordable solution to printing and making copies. Noburo recognised the potential in this process, and the whole Hayama family supported his vision. After careful refinement and a developed technique, Noboru’s printing started to gain attention, and he established a sales office to facilitate the high demand and orders requested from private companies and government offices. This was just the beginning of RISO’s 80 year journey and through much research and experimenting, Noboru soon launched the Inkjet…

Innovation of Inkjet

In 2003, RISO debuted its first high-speed inkjet printer that employed industrial inkjet technologies for business use in the Japanese market. We expanded overseas in 2005, and since then we have been continually advancing our capabilities. The RISO HC5500 was the first model on the market and commenced the high-speed qualities and productivity that we all know so well from RISO. This model ran at 120 ppm and was designed to familiarise businesses with colour printing. Since then, our cold inkjet technology has evolved, and our printers have expanded for a diverse range of industries.

RISO has achieved the status of the world’s fastest cut-sheet inkjet production printer, achieving an astonishing speed of 330 pages per minute ppm duplex, along with MFD printers capable of 165 ppm. These developments have allowed us to continue to grow and stretch across 190 countries and regions, offering innovative print solutions to replace the traditional laser printer.
